About Boulder Ballet School

Welcome to Boulder Ballet School

The Boulder Ballet School (BBS) provides ballet training for all ages, pre-school through adult, in a uniquely artistic and creative atmosphere. As a professional-track ballet school, BBS challenges students dedicated to pursuing dance as a career but also welcomes those who dance purely for enjoyment. BBS focuses on ballet technique because it is a beautiful art in its own right and a strong base for many other styles of dance.

Training Styles

Boulder Ballet School has an outstanding faculty with professional performing backgrounds as well as a variety of dance education and wellness certifications. Our curriculum is designed to produce well-rounded artists who achieve not only technical proficiency but also an essential expressive quality in their dancing. We believe classical ballet technique should be supported by other styles of dance that will prepare our students to become versatile dancers!

Inclusivity

Boulder Ballet is dedicated to creating community and wellness in the studio. We foster an environment of inclusivity and excellence, encouraging a welcoming space where students can grow and expand themselves through the art of dance. Boulder Ballet believes that Diversity Makes Dance Better. Diversity of perspectives, ideas, life experiences, talent, and culture enriches the artistry and practice of dance. We seek, celebrate, and include that richness.

Scholarships are available through our BIPOC Scholarship Program.

Alumni

Our students have excelled in a number of competitions, including the world’s largest, the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), where BBS students have won first-place awards and the regional Grand Prix (single highest award), and have been invited to perform in New York City among the world’s finest young dancers. Former BBS students have gone on to dance with world-class companies throughout the world including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet British Columbia, Hubbard Street Dance, Mark Morris Dance Group, Miami City Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, England’s Royal Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet, to name a few.

Founding history

The origins of Boulder Ballet began with the Ballet Arts Studios, founded in Denver and Boulder by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette in the 1970s. In 1982 the Boulder studio was taken over by Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney. They started the first performing company, originally known as Boulder City Ballet. In 1995, the company and school became known as Boulder Ballet.

Boulder Ballet classes are held in our three spacious studios at the Dairy ARTS Center.

Allicia Curtin (Parent of BBS Student)

After relocating to Boulder during the pandemic, I was thrilled to find such a tremendous ballet school for my two daughters. I am impressed with their increased confidence, body awareness, joy (every class is fun for them), and sense of belonging; they have certainly found a community. I am grateful to have the wonderful teachers and staff at Boulder Ballet supporting my daughters as they grow through adolescence!
