Unlocking Tradition: A Behind-the-Scenes Glimpse
This season, as part of our Unlocking Tradition theme, we’re inviting you to experience The Nutcracker like never before. As you take your seat, you’ll notice that the curtains are open, giving you an exclusive peek into the energy and dedication that bring this beloved holiday classic to life. Watch as our dancers, musicians, and stage crew make final preparations and warm up for the performance. It’s a rare opportunity to witness the magic unfold, from backstage to center stage, before the show even begins!
note: the curtains will close 10 minutes before the show starts.
We’re thrilled to start sharing exclusive peeks into our Company Artists' treasured memories and traditions—unlocking the stories and experiences that make this production so meaningful to each of them.
What is a dear memory around Nutcracker you would like to share?
"A dear Nutcracker memory of mine was in 2012 being Clara in my home studio's Nutcracker with Yuriko Kajiya and
Jared Matthews (formerly with ABT, now principals with Houston Ballet) dancing the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy
and Cavalier. It was so special and inspiring to me as a young ballerina to share the stage with them!"
— Gianna Forte
"I just love all the camaraderie that develops during the span of performances and time backstage. The company gets
to spend so much time together and so many memories and inside jokes are made! It’s also a wonderful time to get to know the school performers and connect with them"
— Carly Hambridge
"When I got to do Clara for the first time at the age of 11, my real parents played my parents in the party scene. My younger brother who was 3 years old at the time also made a cameo appearance in the party scene.
This was also the year that my dad built and handpainted the set for the snow scene. I’m lucky have parents who have been so supportive and so involved from the very beginning.!"
— Marian Faustino
What was your first role in the Nutcracker?
"My first role in The Nutcracker was a Polichinelle.
I was so delighted to finally be performing in the show after watching my sister for years and the dance was perfect - I got to run out from under the skirt and do a cartwheel on stage!"
— Sarah MacGregor
"My first role in the Nutcracker was a mouse at age 5!"
— Gianna Forte
