DESCRIPTIONS OF CLASSES TO ADD TO YOUR DANCERS’ CURRICULUM – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

CONTEMPORARY JAZZ w/Mr. Jarrett
This class will prepare your dancer to be a well-rounded and versatile performer. With roots in ballet, contemporary also explores elements of modern and jazz technique. In this class, your dancer will learn more about rhythm and dynamics in contemporary phrase work with a focus on the renowned Gus Giordano jazz technique, and how to relate form and alignment of cross-training to contemporary and jazz movement. Don’t miss out!

Monday Level 6/7 4:45–6:15pm Studio 1
Monday Levels 4–5 6:15–7:45pm Studio 2

CONTEMPORARY w/Ms. Laura
Studies show that beginning creative and contemporary movement early in your training helps build confidence and versatility in later years. This class will build upon the natural inclinations of your dancer’s movement through improvisation and movement prompts. Dancers will begin to learn the basics of floorwork and explore a wide range of techniques and contemporary styles in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Tuesday Levels 2–3B 5:15–6:15pm Studio 3

CONTEMPORARY w/Ms. Emma
In this class, dancers will be exploring a variety of dance techniques that live within the concert dance realm Including Ballet, Classical and Contemporary Modern, Floorwork, Release Technique, Improvisation, and Contact/Partnering. This class will prepare students to enter the college or professional realm of dance by teaching them what to expect when working with current-day contemporary choreographers. They will also explore different forms of somatic techniques that will create resilience and longevity for years to come.

Monday Level 6/7 6:15–7:45 pm Studio 2

JAZZ/MUSICAL THEATER w/Mr. Jarrett

This class will explore all genres of dance included in current Broadway shows. It will be a high-energy, fun, and technical class driven by storytelling and performance. Ballet and technique are the foundation of this class. Equally as important is the willingness to be silly and creative in an accepting and safe place. Come dance!

Thursday Levels 3A–4 6:15–7:45 pm Studio 2

*CHOREOGRAPHY CLASS w/Ms. Laura M.
This class introduces and investigates the foundational elements of movement - time, space, and energy. Students will explore craft and composition on the solo body and on groups through improvisation, short movement studies, and compositional prompts. As we build our choreographic “toolbox,” we will focus on cultivating the art of witnessing, giving, and receiving feedback, and expanding our definition of dance and choreography. The semester culminates in class work presented in the recital.   (What to Bring: notebook and writing utensil)

These concepts below will be integrated throughout the year in Ms. Andrea’s classes.

FIVE POINT DANCER METHOD
This method was established to help guide dancers in creating their own dance experience using positive self-assessment tools, the knowledge of trusted professional resources, and a curriculum structured in supporting all five points of the program. Through Mindset, Work Ethic, Nutrition, Injury Prevention, and Cross Training, each dancer will begin to understand how they can achieve their goals and create their own dance journey. These additional classes will be added to the BBS schedule and curriculum over time. Each year the School Director will see where the dancers are at in these areas of wellness and will integrate what they need most at that time. The School Director teaches from the FPDM throughout the year as she is able and also teaches this program during summer intensives in numerous ballet schools across the country.

FIVE POINT FIT
Five Point Fit cross-training classes are designed to give the dancers the strength, endurance, and power needed to reach their maximum potential in technique and performance. Dancers are led through a progression of exercises that will in turn leave them feeling strong, empowered, and more versatile. This offers the dancers a new way to look at fitness that we hope leaves a lasting impression they can take with them to college, their future gym, or their future dance career!

TECHNIQUE INTEGRATION
In addition to structured dance classes, it is imperative that time is taken to fully explain and equip dancers with the knowledge and understanding to create the positions, movements, and sequences asked of them. As teachers this requires us to slow down and take the time to see each dancer as an individual with their own personal needs, and make sure the dancers are focused and progressing at a pace that is right for them. This will help them avoid injury and allow each dancer to improve greatly in a short amount of time. The idea of a Technique Integration class is to move at a slower pace, work on an exercise, and then relate it specifically to different genres of dance techniques and choreography.

(What to Bring: TheraBand and tennis ball or racquetball)
