Master Teacher Makaila Wallace (Levels 4 through 7/Professional)
A Canadian born in Vallejo, California, Makaila started dancing at Boulder Ballet. At the age of 14 she began full time training at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and attended Bolshoi Ballet summer programs. She danced with the RWB company as an apprentice before moving to Stockholm, Sweden, to join the Royal Swedish Ballet. There she had the opportunity to perform many lead roles including Myrtha in Giselle, staged and casted by Natalia Makarova. After three years, Makaila returned to Canada and joined Ballet BC where she danced for almost 11 years. Dancing nationally and internationally, her personal performance highlights have included works by choreographers Johan Inger, Crystal Pite, Aszure Barton, Serge Bennathan, Jorma Elo, Jiri Kylian and Medhi Walerski, among others. She has also worked with Roberto Campanella and Robert Glumbek (ProArte Danza) in Toronto, Canada. Makaila has taught at a number of dance intensives and master classes, including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet summer school program. She facilitates regular classes through Harbour Dance in Vancouver and company classes at Ballet BC. She has also taught an adult creative exploration and ballet workshop as part of Ballet BC’s outreach program. In 2015 Makaila was asked to be a part of the Margie Gillis Legacy Project (a platform to ensure her legacy continues), working intimately with Ms. Gillis and performing with her in Florilege in the Sechelt Arts Festival. She has also performed in Dances for a Small Stage and The Dance Deck Series. In 2016, she worked alongside Jorma Elo as his choreographic assistant in Helsinki, Finland, for a full length production of “Alice in Wonderland”. In 2017 Makaila joined Ballet BC’s artistic staff as a part time rehearsal director. As a teacher, she is dedicated to creating a positive and supportive environment. In her classes, she hopes students will have the opportunity to investigate and explore their own personal choices and sensations of movement in an open and creative space.
