Matthew Helmsbegan his training in Colorado on full scholarship at the Academy of Classical Ballet, then studied on full scholarship at the International Ballet School. He competed in the Youth America Grand Prix and the Denver Ballet Guild’s Young Dancers Competition in 2008, receiving a full scholarship to Ballet West Academy in Salt Lake City. Matt was promoted to the Ballet West Pre-Professional Trainee Program in 2010. He has danced with artists from American Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Joffrey Ballet and Kirov Ballet. A frequent guest artist, he has performed with ballet companies in California, Colorado, Idaho, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia performing leading roles in ballets such as The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, and Le Corsaire. He is also a ballet teacher and choreographer. Matt joined Boulder Ballet in 2010.
